On 17 October 2007, the United States Congress bestowed upon His Holiness the Dalai Lama its highest civilian honour, the Congressional Gold Medal, in recognition of his long-standing advocacy of religious harmony, non-violence and human rights throughout the world, and for his efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Tibet issue though dialogue with the Chinese leadership. United States President, George Bush, and Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, presented the medal to His Holiness at an historic ceremony in Washington D.C.
